Properties of a good dining room chair

  • Movement

    A good dining chair encourages movement, ideally both forward and backward, with an open hip angle. The angle between the legs and torso should be greater than 90° so the pelvis can tilt neutrally forward. This creates the most neutral spinal position and prevents back pain while dining.

  • Support in the lower back

    All our chairs have an ergonomic backrest design. This provides optimal support for the lower back. Especially when dining for extended periods, it's essential that the hollow in the lower back is completely filled by the ergonomic chair. Choose a low or high backrest.

  • With or without armrests

    While a chair without armrests can sometimes look more modern, it can be beneficial to choose armrest support. For people with shoulder and/or neck problems, it's advisable to choose an ergonomic dining chair with armrests.

Change your position often

Back-friendly sitting means you frequently change your posture in your chair, feel good back support, and create a hip angle greater than 90°. This is why there are different types of chairs. After all, everyone's build is different. Dining room chairs, however, should fit a table of a standard height. This is often around 75cm. Normally, a table can be adjusted to the correct seat height. However, with a kitchen or dining room table, this is often much more difficult because so many different people sit at such a large table. That's why most dining room chairs have a fixed seat height.

The chairs around a dining table are often used passively. After all, you want to be able to relax and linger at the table. By this, we mean leaning back in your chair and fully embracing the backrest. This distances you from the table, making the correct height less important. The backrest will always move backward, placing your shoulder behind your hip. This creates an open hip angle greater than 90°. When you sit actively, you often have to tuck your feet into the bottom of the chair to achieve the correct open hip angle. The right chair should easily allow this.
