Pocket spring mattress

What is a pocket spring mattress?

A pocket spring mattress is a mattress constructed of supportive metal springs, each individually encased in a pocket. This allows them to react independently. This makes your mattress more point-elastic, allowing you to easily create zones, and preventing movement from being transmitted to your sleeper. This used to be different with granny-spring mattresses.
With a pocket spring mattress, the support comes entirely from the springs, and the pressure distribution comes from the top layer of the mattress itself. Unlike a slatted base system, where you can adjust the base and the mattress serves as a comfort layer, the entire sleeping comfort is determined by the mattress alone.

Buying a pocket spring mattress: what should you pay attention to?

Correct hardness and zoning

To prevent back problems, the mattress zones should match your body type. The only objective check is the alignment of your spine: when lying on your side, it generally forms a straight line, while when lying on your back, it forms an S-curve. Have a specialist check this manually while you're lying on the mattress.
These days, many brands offer 5, 7, or even 9-zone mattresses. Don't be fooled; focus on what you can objectively observe.

Pressure-distributing comfort layer

Lying directly on the springs is uncomfortable, so make sure your mattress has a pressure-distributing comfort layer. We choose latex for its high point elasticity, excellent pressure distribution, and excellent ventilation.
The correct thickness is important to obtain the best comfort; it is a trade-off between optimal spring function with a thinner top layer versus greater pressure distribution with a thicker layer but somewhat less pronounced support.

Ventilating mattress cover

Temperature and humidity play a major role in the quality of your sleep. The right materials in your sleep system act as natural air conditioning. A dry and comfortable sleeping environment promotes a good night's sleep. That's why we use materials that both insulate and ventilate, such as cotton or viscose mattress covers combined with absorbent fibers like merino wool or camel hair, and cool fibers like wild silk. The foam layers also need to be well-ventilated; latex foam is suitable for this, while memory foam is less so.
  • A soft mattress?

A mattress that's too soft causes an unnatural curvature of the spine, causing the pelvis to sink too deeply and compressing the discs in the lower back. This also places stress on muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules, both in side and supine positions. Furthermore, a sleep system that's too soft restricts natural freedom of movement during sleep.
  • A hard mattress?

When sleeping on your side or back, an unnatural curvature of the spine develops when the waist is insufficiently supported and the shoulders and pelvis experience excessive pressure. This leads to poor circulation, pain in the shoulders, hips, and ribs, and restless sleep. This often results in a semi-prone or full-prone sleeping position, which is not a good sleeping position.
  • A good mattress!

A good mattress combines firm and soft zones in the right places, with a firm zone around the pelvis to support weight and a soft zone at the shoulders for optimal comfort. The waist needs extra firm support, as this is where it requires the most support. The exact firmness should always be tailored to the sleeper's body characteristics.

A pocket spring mattress tailor-made for your back!

You'll mainly find ready-made mattresses on the market. These are pre-selected cores with their respective zones and firmness levels, which hopefully will please as many sleepers as possible. This, of course, also has to do with price. Occasionally, you'll have to make compromises. Which mattress should you choose if you prefer a firmness level 3 in the pelvic zone but a firmness level 2 in the shoulder zone?
We also partially opt for such ready-made mattresses, but we also assemble our own spring cores to determine the zones and their firmness. Our range includes mattresses with 5, 7, or even more zones, and in 5 different firmness levels.
At Sit & Sleep, you can also have a pocket spring mattress custom-made. Our consultants will build a mattress that perfectly suits your body type and preferences. And what's more, the mattress can be adjusted later!
  • Customizable feather packages

The mattress core consists of several spring packages, available in five firmness levels. By combining these correctly, we offer the perfect support for everyone. If necessary, we can even custom-make the spring packages.
  • Adjustable top layer

With us, the topper is integrated into the mattress, providing more direct spring support while still maintaining the comfort of a topper. We recommend natural latex with 7 comfort zones, but we can customize the material based on your preferences.
  • Customizable after sale

The mattress is and remains modular, even after delivery. We don't glue the mattress, so we can make adjustments later if necessary to meet your comfort needs. Service remains our top priority!
